(VIDEO) 2011 Paris Air Show: Solar Impulse flight demonstration
The Paris Air Show, which closed its doors tonight welcomed a special guest over the event, the HB-SIA, better known as the Solar Impulse, a solar powered 63m giant.
If you went to Le Bourget you certainly had the chance to admire the Solar Impusle (HB-SIA), and the line to get inside its hangar, proof of the public interest in this unique craft which has only one equivalent on the seas, the Planet Solar. A specific hangar was reserved for the plane next to the runway.
The team led by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg was able to present its vision for a week to the world: politicians, delegations, business visitors and 350,000 visitors.
“Solar Impulse is a reminder that we must think of more energy efficient aircraft solutions right away,”
“Shaping the future of aviation also means creating sustainable aircraft,” French President Nicolas Sarkozy
“Solar Impulse represents the dreams and passion of aviation at Le Bourget Air Show, but beyond symbolism there are concrete questions and solutions,” Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, the French Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Transport.
“You are very convincing and, on top of it, you are actually demonstrating what you are talking about!” Christine Lagarde, Minister for Economic Affairs, Finance and Industry.
This morning the Solar Impulse left its hangar for a flight demonstration in ideal conditions, sunshine and no wind, in front of 30,000 visitors, ending a very productive week for the HB-SIA team.
The aviation, which accounts for 3% of the total CO2 emissions, is investing heavily in green technologies, more efficient engines, bio fuel, concepts and prototypes as HB-SIA, a pure technology demonstrator.
