This report brings together all the initiatives and partnerships worldwide and aims to show the evolution of the technology
1. Yazaki and Evatran to develop Plugless Power
Eva Tran, already known for having installed their technology "PluglessPower" in Google offices (see March 2011), has signed a development agreement with the company Yazaki to enable the optimal development and as many tests as necessary of hands-free charging technology.
Together they want to develop inductive charging for residential, commercial, and industrial use, selling it as an option for manufacturers and retailers.
You simply place the vehicle above the pad that transfers up to 3.3 kW of electricity for recharging in a time similar to the one obtained on a household plug.
Eva Tran will also benefit from the experience of Yazaki systems integration and high voltage components for hybrid vehicles.
Headquartered in Michigan Yazaki North America is a subsidiary dee Yazaki Corp., Japan (200,000 people in 39 countries).
2. Two new partnerships for Halo IPT
Halo IPT has announced two strategic partnerships to begin mass production and development of its Wireless Charging technology:
-Chargemaster PLC in Europe, the largest operator of charging stations in England, which will handle the UK production of HaloIPT.
-Evida PowerAsia Ltd., a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, operating in China but also in Israel and Europe. Together they want to make technology available to the consumer, as an option on a vehicle that will be released shortly, with a goal of 40,000 units with over 5 years in Asia.

Volvo and Flanders Drive
As part of the "Flanders' Drive” initiative Volvo has assigned an electric C30 to tests on inductive charging (wireless).
The Project named CED (Continuous Electric Drive) aims to insert charging infrastructure on the road, in the ground in order to recharge continuously, the project will also try to set a standard in the technology.
The charge of a battery pack equivalent to the one of Volvo C30 Electric should take about 1h20 in the case of a fully discharged battery. The charging device to be submitted for evaluation is sized for 20 kW.
EvaTran™ has installed its Plugless Power charging stations in the headquarters of Google in Mountain View, California.
These stations will be used first to supply the low speed electric vehicles used by Google employees on the campus, these vehicles will be retrofitted in order to be able to recharge wirelessly.
The first tests will be performed on these smal vehicles in order to evaluate the intrest of the technology before a probable extension to the fleet of Google’s carsharing plug-in vehicles designed for its employees.
EvaTran’s technology is quite similar to the one developed by Halo IPT.
With this installation, the company EvaTran has an opportunity to demonstrate its technology and hopes to expand it and make deals with automakers to equip electric vehicles in series.

“The interest shown by Google and the cooperation we’ve received to retrofit their EV provides evidence that a simple, convenient charging process is needed for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.”
We were presenting you the technology developed by Halo IPT last November.
This technology is offered on the concept of electric Rolls Royce, the 102EX can recharge the battery wirelessly through the principle of coupled magnetic resonance compared by Halo IPT as similar to the principle used to recharge electric toothbrushes but in bigger.

IPT Wireless Charging is based on a technology called Inductive Power Transfer, or IPT in short. With a primary-side that is power supply with track and a secondary-side pick-up pad with controller you can easily and safely transfer electricity.
It can provide fast or slow charging depending on the needs. No more drawback from EV and even advantages now: it connects you to internet and provides real time traffic information, simply ideal!
Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) wireless charging uses strongly coupled magnetic resonance to transfer power from a transmitting pad on the ground to a receiving pad on an electric car. To charge, an electric car simply has to be parked or even driven over a pad. Charging is immediate, robust and reliable. This solution allows charging while driving and is a big step towards daily use and long distance journey in electric vehicles thanks to dynamic charging
Delphi Automotive has reached an agreement with WiTricity Corp., a wireless energy transfer technology provider, to develop automatic wireless charging products for hybrid and electric vehicles. The collaboration between the two companies will help establish a global infrastructure of safe and convenient charging options for consumer and commercial electric vehicles.
"This is groundbreaking technology that could enable automotive manufacturers to integrate wireless charging directly into the design of their hybrid and electric vehicles," said Randy Sumner, director, global hybrid vehicle development, Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture. "Delphi's expertise in global engineering, validation and manufacturing coupled with WiTricity's patented wireless energy transfer technology uniquely positions us to make wireless charging of electric vehicles a reality."
Sumner said the wireless charging system would involve no plugs or charging cords. "Charging an electric car should be as easy as parking it in your garage or parking spot," Giler said. "WiTricity's high efficiency wireless energy transfer technology is ideally suited for electric vehicle charging, and our partnership with Delphi will help to quickly get this technology deployed in OEM vehicles and infrastructure projects worldwide."
Wireless charging technology will need to co-exist with plug-in charging solutions, Sumner added, so that electric vehicle drivers have the ability to charge their vehicle when they are away from their wireless charging source.
The Artic Whisper is tested since the beginning of the month in the city of Umea in Sweden, it integrates several advanced technologies.
We presented you the rapid charging system developed by Opbrid last October (see article below), working via pantographs and allowing to charge in a simple and safe way.
This Artic Whisper is its first real-life application: a Volvo 7700 bus converted to hybrid, it id equipped with Valence lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 100kWh, depending on the conditions they allow from one to three hours of range. Incorporating the Busbaaar technology developed by Opbrid allows to extend the battery range up to 18h!
The Busbaar system is comparable to the technology used by trams (without the wires throughout the city). At the end of the route a charging station is installed, pantographs deploy from the roof and go in contact with the electrical supply, everything is done automatically and the driver does not even have to get out of the bus, a 5 to 10 minutes charge is sufficient and makes this electric bus as reliable as a diesel one.
The bus is charged at night and the system Opbrid provides extra energy, but, just in case, a diesel range extender (generator) using bio-diesel is fitted for a maximum reliability. With this technology the bus operates electric only almost all the time.
The vision of the city of Umea is to develop the use of these fast charging buses for 2014 where the city will be the European cultural capital.
The conversion of the hybrid bus to rapid charge made by e-Traction and Hybricon is performed in only 6 weeks.

The problem is always the same: charging time. Because of that, electric buses cannot be used on a daily basis as a public transportation.
Now, things have changed: thanks to new batteries that supports fast charge and over heat, and an ingenious recharging system. Electric buses can recharge in a few minutes which allows a profitable business model in just 3 to 4 years with low infrastructure costs compared to tramways and subway….
