(VIDEO) New pictures and update on the R8 e-tron, launch in 2012
After Tesla who invited us into its factory to meet the Model S, Audi offers us a tour of its Neckarsulm site where the R8 e-tron is being developed and built in small series.
Audi is determined to hoist the word "e-tron" to the same symbolic level as "quattro".
The R8 Electric will arrive on our roads in late 2012, it borrows a lot of elements from the R8 including its aluminum chassis (Audi Space Frame), which weighs just 200kg for a total weight of 1600kg.
No details on the final characteristics of this electric sports car have emerged but, they should be very close to those presented in 2009 with the first reveal of the concept e-tron concept: 313hp and 0 to100kph in 4.8 seconds
Audi also confirms its ambitions on the electric mobility:
“With the R8 e-tron, we are showing how inspiring electric mobility can be. Every system in this car has been tuned for maximum performance and range,”
“The R8 e-tron is a very important project for Audi because the competence and experience we glean from it will later flow into the large volume production of electric automobiles.”
“We want to be the leading premium manufacturer of electric vehicles by 2020,”
Franciscus van Meel, Head of Electric Mobility Strategy at AUDI AG.
