(VIDEO) An Azores island to become autonomous with a 1megawatt Sodium Sulfur battery

The island of Graciosa and its 4,500 inhabitants are about to become self sufficient thanks to wind and solar energy.

The German company Younicos, specialized energy storage has installed an intelligent system based on renewables and a Japanese Sodium Sulfur battery technology.

Younicos has developped four products:

-Island System (the one developed a Graciosa)
-Yill, mobile stroage units (also visible in the video)
-Yoe, storage units for home to optimize energy consumption
-Yana, solar charging stations

Currently still under development the Graciosa island system by Younicos shoulld be fully operational in 2012.
