Fuel cell vehicles: engineers of US Army and General Motors team up!

The research and engineering center (TARDEC) and the carmaker General Motors are going to produce a fuel cell Chevrolet vehicle. The concept will be unveiled next October at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) meeting in Washington D.C.

 

 

The American company (GM) is widely recognized as one of the best-positioned brands on the automobile segment, with 30 production centers worldwide. Thanks to its partnerships, the company produced cars under the brands names Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling.

A win-win situation?

The partnership between TARDEC and (GM) dates back to 2015. At that time, the car brand had wished to join forces to produce a vehicle powered by a fuel cell. TARDEC takes advantage of the partnership to get their hands on next-generation technologies currently in demand for military applications. On the other hand, General Motors will do some feedback on the assets offered by the fuel cell technology, much sought-after.

For the American army whose ambitions are becoming transparent, this partnership makes sense. The latter wants to leverage application and sales of this innovative next-generation technology. The Chevrolet will show the capabilities of a hydrogen powered vehicle. Notably, the energy producing system carried by the Fuel Cell; cleaner mobility, soundless driving, exportable power generation, low-end torque, water generation.

For TARDEC’s Paul Rogers, “Fuel Cell propulsion has low-end torque capability that is useful in an off-road environment,” Rogers said. “It also offers additional characteristics attractive to both commercial and military off-road use.”

TARDEC understands well that the vehicle must be as silent as possible during military operations and still be capable of generating electricity inside and outside the vehicle. These last few years, much progress has been made and the time has come to work on the viability of the technology during off-road extreme military operations.

According to Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s global Fuel cell activities, “This project is another example of how fuel cell propulsion can play a role in non-traditional applications,” He added, “We need to continue pursuing these opportunities along with our plans for production of a commercial fuel cell system in the 2020 time frame.”
