(Update of August 18th article with the first images and a video demo)

The Roborace is a beast, literally similar to a supercar from a science-fiction movie. Showcased for the first time in March this year, the autonomous racing car is no longer a concept car, but an almost finalized version.

The vehicle was invented by a company specialized in investment named Kinetik, also known for having actively participated in the development of several electric trucks with the London-based company Charge.

A visual inspiration

Kinetik asked visual artist Daniel Simon to be in charge of designing the racing car. The plan was to create a super dynamic racing car, for an even better result than what was shown for the first time last March. « We changed every single surface on the Robocar to further enhance the performance, but kept the iconic character of the original concept," said Daniel Simon.

Autonomy with standard technology

The super car numerous lidar and radar sensors that will strategically be placed around the front, back, and the sides of the vehicle. Also, integrating two navigation system sensors on top, with sensors as well. However, the released drawings don’t suggest that the vehicle will be using GPS or Russian version: Glonass. As far as we know, all these are standard options as far as autonomous vehicle technology goes.

Regarding the graphic, we noticed the supercomputer Nvidia Drive PX 2, which will be the brain of the super car. The Drive PX 2 is a beast, which uses 12 CPU cores to make 24 trillion operations a second. Logically the vehicle will have its own dedicated cooling vent on the car in order to guarantee proper efficiency. Regarding this, Daniel Simon said, “That is a highly complex challenge for design and engineering and we enjoyed that process thoroughly. “

A vehicle shaped for the formula E

We know that the plan is to make the super car function in the manner of the Formula E. This means that there will be 10 teams, each with two cars, a total of 20 cars for a one hour-long race. However, according to the marketing material the event will very much be like a “show” illustrating “« disruptive and innovative new formats showcasing safety and extreme driving capabilities. » The third season of the formula E is to begin in October 201§ and will end in the summer of 2017.
