(VIDEO) Solar Impulse 2 : this solar plane will travel the world with 70hp

06/05/2014

We do not present this giant electric solar plane, the Solar Impulse anymore, born in Switzerland it made its first flight in 2009. After having flown day and night in Europe and the United States, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg just built a new aircraft for a larger challenge !

This time, the explorer and engineer are going for a world tour with solar energy, a challenge that recalls the Planet Solar but obviously in the air.

The challenge in figures

The Solar Impulse 2 will begin its journey in a little less than a year in March 2015 and until the end of July, 5 months during which the solar airplane will travel 35.000km and fly 500 hours in 10 legs splitted between two pilots.
The start will take place in the Persian Gulf

Specs of the Solar Impulse 2

With a wingspan greater than a Boeing 747: 72metres, it weighs only 2300kg, the equivalent of a big car!
Its wings are fitted with 17,000 photovoltaic cells powering four electric motors developing 17.5hp each. These cells combined to 633kg of lithium batteries allow to store energy during the day.
