(VIDEO) EADS E-Fan: maiden flight of the electric aircraft in Bordeaux

Update of March 23rd article with a new video of its official flight demo with the french Minister Arnaud Montebourg

Presented as a prototype (not functional yet as it was under development for 8 months only) at Paris’ Air Show in June 2013, the electric aircraft EADS E-Fan achieved its inaugural flight on the Bordeaux-Merignac airport a few days ago.

This 2-seater electric aircraft is 6.7m long and 9.5m wide – built for training purposes -  is powered by two electric motors for a total output of 60kW (82ch) authorizing a 220kph max speed and 160kph cruise speed while the Lithium Polymer batteries are placed in the wings and offer one hour range.

Developped in partnership with Aero Composites Saintonge (ACS), a French SME, the E-Fan is made from carbon fiber and ACS’ founder Didier Esteyne took care of the maiden flight.

More details on its release should arrive by the end of the year but Airbus Group should put it in production for 2016 via a branch specialized in electric aircrafts that will be called VoltAir, like one of the company’s previous concept actually!
