Tokyo 2013 : VW Twin-Up – plug-in diesel hybrid Up - world’s Most frugal city car on the way

After plug-in hybrid studies TwinDrive, VW reveals a diesel plug-in hybrid version of its Up city car at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, the Twin Up!


Teased in February 2013, the plug-in hybrid VW Up is called Twin-Up, it combines a 800cc twin-cylinder engine and an electric motor for record consumption and emission figures - based on the XL1 powertrain.

In detail the electric motor develops 47hp, just as much as the diesel engine that delivers in turn 199nm of torque, the combined power reaches 74hp and 215 nm, they are matted to a DSG7 gearbox.

Thanks to its 8.6kWh battery pack the range in electric only is announced at 48km, this Twin -Up weighs 1205kg and its consumption is listed at 1.1l per 100km for emissions of 27g/km thanks to the plug-in diesel hybrid technology.

On the performance side this Twin -Up is not fast with a 0 to 100kph in 15.7 seconds, but still a top speed of 140kph and above all it sets the benchmark in terms of efficiency!

Start of production is announced for 2015!
