(VIDEO) Geneva 2013: electric Land Rover Defender prototypes
You may remember the Game Viewer Concept, a vehicle built by the company Axeon, or even the plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport, Range_e.
Land Rover has decided to go further and developed 7 prototypes of electric Defenders "all-terrain electric vehicle research" that will be tested in extreme conditions.
Developed by the Land Rover Advanced Engineering Team in partnership with Axeon, these electric Defender use the same motor as the Game Viewer Concept that now develops an additional 11kW at 70kW and still 330Nm, its 27kWh Lithium-Ion battery allows a range announced at 80km, while the 7kW rapid charger recharges in 4 hours only!
This 410kg battery adds only 100kg compared to the Defender 110.
In line with the spirit of keeping it simple and rustic but also to keep the weight as low as possible, the electrical components are cooled by air (motor, inverter, battery).
Fitted with regenerative braking, in hill descent mode, the electric motor acts as a generator to provide up to 30kW of electricity.
"This project is acting as a rolling laboratory for Land Rover to assess electric vehicles, even in the most arduous all-terrain conditions. It gives us a chance to evolve and test some of the technologies that may one day be introduced into future Land Rover models," said Antony Harper, Jaguar Land Rover Head of Research.
