Today at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen unveils the 2012 Polo BlueGT which introduces for the first time on a VW vehicle the cylinder shut off technology that already exists on Audi’s cars.
The BlueGT features a 4-cylinder TSI engine with 140hp that can achieve a combined fuel consumption of 4.7 l / 100km with a top speed of 210kph ( 125mph), for emissions of only 108 g/km of CO2 ! While the 0 to 100 kph takes 7.9 seconds.
Regarding the specific technology introduced in this BlueGT, you find all the BlueMotion technologies like the start-stop system or the double clutch DSG 7-speed gearbox, and of course a great innovation from Volkswagen the cylinder shut-off.
This system will disable in some cases the cylinders 2 and 3: under conditions of low loads which will reduces consumption of about 0.7 to 1 liter of gasoline per 100 kilometers depending on your driving style. This system is made possible by the rotation of the camshaft on its axis and which stops the intake valves for cylinders 2 and 3 under specific conditions.
Indeed, the engine must be between 1250 and 4000 rpm and the torque used between 25 and 100Nm which is almost 70% of the time use. It does not affect the motor’s behavior, in fact there is no difference between using the 2 or 4 cylinders mode. In need of power, just press the accelerator pedal and in 36 millisecondes the engine will go back into 4 cylinder mode.
