Rhea 850 Electra: an hybrid boat with range extender

21/12/2011
As promised in our article on the Nautic 2011 (Paris Boat Show), here is a detailed presentation of the New Rhea Marine, 850 Timonier in electric version.

Located near the Ile de Re in France, Rhea Marine operates a green shift this year as evidenced by the Rhea 850 Electra, but also with optional diesel hybrid powertrains on almost the entire range.

More than just a diesel hybrid boat (in parallel) as they exists now, the technology developed is much more efficient and enables significant reductions in consumption, emissions but also noise.

In details, the Rhea 850 Electra features two compact and light electric motors, and a diesel engine that powers a generator. The diesel engine is never used directly to power the propeller (mechanical decoupling).
Thanks to its electric motor the boat requires less maintenance (from 100.000hours) and offers a longer service life.

In figures:

Electric motors are developing each 145kW (197hp) in peak and 136hp continuous, they are powered by a 38.5kWh Lithium Ion battery pack. The batteries are not rechargeable via a plug, but The diesel engine via its 100kW generator recharges them in 20 to 30 minutes while providing enough power to propel the boat at the same time.

This powertrain is very flexible, it will be extended to the whole range with powers ranging from 30 to 600hp and possible developments in terms of range thanks to larger battery packs. Note also the possibility of retrofitting this technology to existing boats with conventional combustion engines.

The cooling of the batteries and the generator is done via glycol
With the latest generation of components the Rhea 850 Electra doesn’t weight more than conventional boats, the electric motors weighting only 45kg each.
