Acquisition of Goupil: Polaris future major player in electric mobility?

17/11/2011
After the acquisition of GEM (Global Electric Motorcars), we learned yesterday that it was now the French Goupil Industrie that had been bought by the American Polaris.

Specializing in recreational vehicles (snowmobiles, motorcycles and ATVs) Polaris develops step by step a portfolio of brands operating in the electric mobility industry.

Polaris has indeed shares in several clean mobility companies and could become one of the leading electric mobility manufacturers through the acquisition of companies specialized on some vehicle types or markets.

“As Polaris continues to deliver outstanding performance and gain market share in our core business, we are excited to acquire Goupil and add to our growing small electric vehicle lineup. We are eager to pursue the natural synergies between their commercial light duty work products and the more people-mover oriented offerings from our GEM business,” Scott Wine, Polaris chief executive officer.

After a stake in Brammo last October and the acquisition of GEM, this is the third company "electro-oriented" that Polaris buys.

Goupil is a French company based in Bourran they have developed a range of utility vehicles based on a modular platform. This allows to provide a wide range of vehicles with low development costs.

Polaris does not hide its long-term vision and the growth potential they see in electric vehicles.

“We see tremendous, long term growth in the global small electric vehicle market, and Goupil, with its established product line, history of profitable growth, and segment-leading European presence, will be an integral part of our strategy to realize that potential.”

Polaris is committed to keep Goupil employees and plans to develop sales outside of Europe. In 2010, Goupil realized a turnover of $ 25 million, an impressive figure for a manufacturer of pure electric vehicles ... Polaris turnover was $ 1.99 billion in 2010.

Polaris also owns 25% of KTM that launched the Freeride E at the Milan fair a few days ago…
The unique electric vehicle sold under the brand’s name, the Ranger EV might get some “brothers” soon…
