Martin Winterkorn, chairman of the VW Group announced last Friday that by 2013-2014 VW will launch a wide range of plug-in hybrids:
"The electric car will impact the future of individual mobility in crucial ways – and Volkswagen is spearheading this technology. Over the mid-term, the plug-in hybrid offers great potential, because it combines the best of two worlds in one vehicle."
What is a Plug-In Hybrid?
This is an evolution of the current hybrid technology, thanks to a rechargeable battery with bigger capacity.
The principle remains the same, an electric motor is combined with an ICE (internal combustion engine) to reduce emissions, but instead of recharging through energy regeneration as in the current hybrid, the battery can be recharged allowing greater reductions in emissions and a bigger range in full electric mode.
This technology is really interesting for intelligent four-wheel drive engines.
